Arena Central granted 5-year planning extension
Miller Developments and Andy Ruhan’s Bridgehouse Capital have been granted a 5-year planning extension for their 2.3m sq ft mixed-use Arena Central development in Birmingham.
Birmingham city council planners agreed to extend the joint venture’s existing planning permission which is due to expire in February 2010, at a cabinet meeting last Thursday,
The jv was hoping for a 10-year extension to February 2020.
Miller Development’s director Jonathan Wallis said: “We were hoping for 10 years but councillors thought a five-year extension was more appropriate.”
The jv – known as Arena Central Developments – will now have to submit a reserved matters application to the council by February 2015, which will include detailed proposals for the £500m scheme.
The drop in the scheme’s value during the economic downturn, coupled with the general lack of occupier demand, has meant that the scheme is currently not economically viable.
Site clearance has already begun on the former Central Television studios site off Broad Street.
