Amazon paid £63m in business rates despite sales of £8bn

Amazon paid only £63m in business rates in 2018 despite making £8bn of sales in the UK. The online retail giant announced the figure yesterday after pressure from MPs.

The sum is expected to anger traditional retailers who pay far more. The business rates system is based on the value of sites.

Amazon was ordered to disclose how much it paid in business rates by the Commons housing committee last month amid fears its competitive advantage was harming the high street.
