Amazon gets go-ahead to create last-mile logistics hub in City car park

Plans to repurpose 39 spaces in London Wall Car Park, EC2, for use as a last-mile logistics hub to be operated by Amazon Logistics have been approved.

The plans will allow Amazon to deliver parcels within a 2km radius using pedestrian porters and cargo cycles instead of motorised vehicles.

A report from the City of London Corporation’s planning officers said the scheme would remove 85 vehicles and up to 23,000 vehicle journeys from central London’s roads each year.

The planners added in the report that creating a logistics hub at the car park would “generate income from a presently under-utilised asset”.

London Wall Car Park has 195 car parking spaces and on average 48 spaces are left empty at peak times, according to parking data taken between October 2018 and April 2020.

The terms of Amazon’s lease on the space were not disclosed.
