Alchemi Group secures planning for Vauxhall tower

Alchemi Group has secured consent for its 360,000 sq ft mixed-use Vauxhall tower.

The development at 12-20 Wyvil Road, SW8, will provide 225 private flats with a gym, swimming pool, sauna, club room and parking, over 36 storeys. There are two separate buildings, an eight-storey block with 23 rented affordable homes and another with 12,000 sq ft of offices and 3,600 sq ft of shops.

The Stiff + Trevillion-designed scheme incorporates brick façades and glazed terracotta panels, a nod to Lambeth’s historic pottery trade.

The development is on the south-east corner of Vauxhall’s tall building cluster near the proposed Nine Elms tube station, due to open in 2020.

Alchemi acquired the site in late 2015 with an existing planning consent for a 36-storey tower comprising 305,000 sq ft, accommodating 175 private residential apartments.

The group redesigned the site, increasing the private apartment net saleable area by 62%. The project will start on site in May 2017, with a provisional completion date of late 2020.

Lance Routh, architect, Stiff + Trevillion, said: “When Alchemi bought this site, it challenged us to radically reappraise the original consent. We wanted to create a piece of city, centred on a public space with a mix of uses that will contribute to making this residential quarter a vibrant part of London.

“Alchemi encouraged us to design a sophisticated high-quality building that will stand out from its neighbours. We sought inspiration from the wave of recent residential developments in Manhattan; this is manifested in the finely crafted bespoke glazed ceramic elevations to the tower.”
