More than 360,000 new homes are currently planned for the country’s green belt, up from 81,000 in 2012, research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England shows.
In 2014-15, planning permission was granted to build 11,977 new homes on green belt land, up from 2,258 in 2009-10, according to figures from the Commons library. A net 41,570 hectares of green belt was lost between 2004 and 2014-15.
The east and the north west of England are the areas with highest planned number of homes.
